History
Hopewell Investors was founded in February of 1993 based on an increased
desire to learn more about investing through the sharing of ideas among
friends. The three driving tenets of HI - Financial learning, Friendship,
and to be Successful in our investment decisions - still are the key
components of our club today.
Peter Gibson, original President and Founder of HI, Ed Granski, founding
Secretary, and Newell Thompson, met for the first time at 29 Honey Brook
Drive sometime in February of 1993 to discuss all issues regarding the club
and the direction we wanted it to take.
A big influence in the formation of Hopewell Investors is Princeton
Investors' Articles of Association which we were able to review through
Jack Wallace. Ed Granski's legal background was invaluable in creating our
own partnership agreement including:
# of Members
nominating members
types of membership
meetings, where,when,etc.
meeting guidelines
executive positions and responsibilities
voting privileges
owning & selling of shares
withdrawal from membership
The first 2 or 3 meeting were solely devoted to developing the basis for
what HI has become. The first several meetings were held at Mignella's, or
more aptly "Hillbilly Hall". It was at Hillbilly hall we had our first
discussions about investment ideas and purchased Philip Morris. With Clint
Eastwood and John Wayne watching over us, Hopewell Investors began meeting
regularly in the spring of 1993.
By the end of 1993, Hopewell Investors brought a 4th member into the group
and we welcomed Chris Kuenne at our December meeting. It was also at this
time the group had realized that perhaps there was an alternative to
Hillbilly Hall where we could meet more privately and find a better meal.
Thus, we moved to the Rocky Hill Inn beginning in 1994.
The Rocky Hill Inn offered a great private room upstairs with good
food, BUT we quickly realized a move was necessary as they prohibited
cigar smoking. After 2 or 3 meetings there we adjourned to the Yankee
Doodle Tap Room for a couple transitional meetings. New member John
Ellis offered to host meetings at his lovely estate on the American
Boychoir Campus which was a tremendous success. John's affinity to
fine wine, fine smoke, fine pizza, and fine poker proved to be a
winning combination. We enjoyed a nice run at John's abode. There
were two roadblocks for continuing the meetings on Lambert Drive -
The saturation of cigar smoke into the floorboards, ceiling and walls
was seriously devaluing his property. Secondly, the membership was
growing and there was a feeling we needed a setting that could
accommodate. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, John began
courting his future wife, Karen. The smell of beer and cigar really
was not conducive to a flowering relationship.
Our next move to the Nassau Club is home to HI's current meetings. We
reside in the highly esteemed "Gun Room".
